Reply to requests

In February 1999, questionnaires were sent from the Users Office to the users of SPring-8. The following are the excerpts of the requests from the users relevant to the Biology Preparation Room, and our reply to them.

1.Instruments the room should be equipped with

Chromatography equipment including FPLC, HPLC and desalting columns

AKTA-FPLC (Amersham-Pharmacia) has been purchased. Desalting columns come in a variety of products, so we expect you to bring with you the product most suitable for your purposes.(1/1/2000)

Ultracentrifuge, utility such as pressurized nitrogen, cold room, dynamic light scattering instrument

The equipment which is expensive, occupies a lot of space, or needs plumbing is difficult to obtain. However, more requests make the purchase more likely. So, keep requesting.(1/1/2000)

Circulating water bath, dewar for liquid nitrogen

They have already been purchased. (1/1/2000)

2.Disposable items needed

We received a lot of request for other equipment and disposable items, but many of them are the ones we already had at the time of questionnaire. Please check our home page.

3.Reqests from users who consider that the room isn't functioning well

Too little space in the experimental table or in the shelves to start new preparations.

It is true that the space is limited. Users are expected not to occupy unnecessary space.(1/1/2000)

It isn't clear what "preparation" is supported by the room.

It depends on what preparation users expect us to support. User's request are important in shaping the room.(1/1/2000)

The room is left unlocked.

It is our policy that the room is open 24 hrs a day for any biology users in need. For this reason, we do not restrict access to the room for now by means of ID cards. However, the policy is subject to change in the future if the restricted access is the choice of users.(1/1/2000)

4.@Reply to more recently submitted requests

The incubator should be moved away from the deep freezer of the protein purification unit to avoid possible effect of vibration.

If we do so, we will have to move it closer to the centrifuges or the ice maker, which may also make vibrations. The room does not have enough space so that the incubator can be moved to a place free of vibration. (2/1/2003)

We need an Anton Parr densitometer.

This instrument is expensive and we cannot expect enough demand to justify the purchase. (2/1/2003)

User's requests and comments are welcome any time, and they will be fed back from time to time. The sheets of questionnaires are provided in the room. You may also send an email to us. However, we do not guarantee that all the requests will be answered.
