Message from the Chair |
| @The
SPring-8 Users Society established in 1993 was disbanded and absorbed
into a new user organization, the SPring-8 Users Community (SPRUC). The
SPRUC, where all SPring-8 users are members, came into being in April
2012. The main reason for the major reorganization is that the SPring-8
user base grew to about 12000 while the number of the members of the
SPring-8 Users Society, where participation was voluntary, stood at
about 1300 and the gap between the size of the user base and that of
the SPring-8 Users Society had widened. Dialectically speaking, it is a
shift from quantity to quality and also the needs of the time brought
about by the increase in the number of users associated with the
transition from the construction phase to the utilization phase and
then to the maturity phase, which is epitomized by "More is different"
as P. W. Anderson suggested. The mission of the SPRUC is to maintain and develop SPring-8's standing as a world's top research base for public use. To accomplish the mission, it is essential to contribute to the advancement of the facilities and measurement techniques and the improvement of convenience of the utilization system in collaboration with SPring-8. At the same time, it is imperative to facilitate the development of science and technology and the creation of new science and industry as well as the training of young researchers and the development of society through the use of SPring-8. Under these circumstances, it is hoped that users will make a concerted commitment to SPring-8. On the occasion of the reorganization, we not only get all users involved but also introduce a system for organic coordination among the notable research and development institutes where users belong, user consortia and companies in order to put together the opinions of users systematically and effectively. In other words, we have elected about 30 notable organizations considering the number of users, regional characteristics and research areas, and formed the Board of Representing Organizations to seek expert advice on a broad perspective on the business of the SPRUC. As one of the key activities of the SPRUC, the SPring-8 Symposium is held annually. The symposium will provide a forum for scientific exchange among users of a broad range of research areas. During the symposium, participants will share information about the promotion and development of the SPring-8 use through research results presentations given by SPring-8 users from academia and industry and discussions on the scrap and build of beamlines and SPring-8 future plans. Users will also exchange views among themselves and with the facility and discuss the future direction for the constructive utilization of SPring-8. In addition, the SPRUC hopes to further stimulate the research activities of SPring-8 users by taking over the research groups of the SPring-8 Users Society and by bringing in new research groups from a wide variety of research and utilization areas. Since the SPRUC is a newly established organization, there is still much room for improvement. Therefore, your continued support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your cooperation. |
