Scientists at SPring-8 win DuBose-Crouse Award in the 2010 International Metallographic Contest (Special Topic)

Metallographic analysis of iron meteorite has won the Second Place in the DuBose-Crouse Award in the 2010 International Metallographic Contest.

Research outline:
The DuBose-Crouse Award is an award for unique, unusual, and new techniques in microscopy. Masato Kotsugi (SPring-8/JASRI) and Chiharu Mitsumata (Tohoku Univ.) have won the Second Place in the DuBose-Crouse Award in the 2010 International Metallographic Contest. The work is entitled as "Unique Magnetic Domain Structure in Iron Meteorite Induced by the Presence of L10-FeNi" that unveils the magnetic property of iron meteorite resulting from its metallographic structure from the standpoint of material science for the first time.

The research team utilized photoelectron emission microscopy (PEEM) in connection with the beamlines BL25SU and BL39XU at SPring-8 to obtain the spatial information on composition, lattice structure and magnetic domain structure with several tens nanometer resolution. The observed magnetic domain structure is unique, resulting from the strong magnetic anisotropy of tetrataenite (L10-FeNi) phase segregated at the interface in the Widmanstaetten structure. L10-FeNi is currently attracting new attention for practical use in magneto-electronic devices because of its large magnetic anisotropy and the inexpensive resource of Fe and Ni.
