A joint research team led by Assistant Prof. Yuichiro Fujiwara, Prof. Yasushi Okamura (Integrative Physiology, Graduate School of Medicine & Frontier Bioscience), and Prof. Atsushi Nakagawa (Institute for Protein Research) revealed the atomic-level mechanism inherent in the human body that expels invading germs: two hydrogen-ion permeable proteins coalesce (formation of a dimer) to control in-vivo pH in tune with body temperature. The results, which are also an important discovery from the viewpoint of biological defense response and are typically infection-associated fever, were published in Nature Communications, a British online journal, on May 5, 16:00 hrs GMT.
