Title: SURFACE DYNAMICS AT THE SOLID ELECTROLYTE INTERFACE

Abstract: Significant progress has been made over the last few years toward the development of in situ structural and spectroscopic techniques for monitoring with temporal and spatial resolution dynamics of events at electrode-electrolyte interfaces. The coupling of these methodologies to electrodes of dimensions in the µm range is particularly promising, as the time constant of the cell and, thus, the time required for the interface to achieve potential control can be greatly reduced. Particularly exciting are the prospects of combining two or more of such probes to follow simultaneously the time evolution of two different interfacial observables, while the electrical perturbation is applied. Indeed, a few illustrations of such a dual tactic have been described in this and other laboratories. To date, however, no schemes appear to have been devised to allow simultaneous time-resolved monitoring of two species adsorbed on electrode surfaces with both specificity and sensitivity. To be described in this presentation is the combined use of reflectance spectroscopy (ΔR/R) and second harmonic generation (SHG) to follow independently OH and CO adsorbed, COads on a single Pt(111) microfacet in aqueous acidic electrolytes during voltammetric cycles leading to the oxidation of COads and subsequent readsorption of solution phase CO. Possible extension of this tactic to other type of interfaces will be discussed.
