SPEED-Mk.II

A Kawai-type large-volume press, SPEED-Mk.II, was installed by the research grants from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan, which was acquired by E. Ohtani (Tohoku Univ., No. 12126101) and E. Takahashi (Tokyo Inst. Tech., No. 12002006) in 2002 (Figure). Similar to SPEED-1500, SPEED-Mk.II is a double-stage type (Kawai-type) compression with 1500-ton ram force, and the outside first-stage consists of six cubic type anvils in the [100] axis direction. The inside second-stage consists of eight cubic anvils, each of which has one corner truncated into a triangular face. The eight faces form an octahedral cavity. The eight second-stage anvils that are compressed by the six first-stage anvils compress an octahedral shaped pressure medium (Kawai-type high pressure vessel). In the present system, a 26 x 26 x 26 mm3 tungsten carbide (WC) or a 14 x 14 x 14 mm3 sintered diamond anvil (SD) can be used as the second anvil. 50 GPa over 2,000°C has been reached with the SD anvils. SPEED-Mk.II can be moved in the 4-axis directions (y1-, x-, y2-, z-axis), and z-axis rotation with a precision of 1 micron. The z-axis rotation can be used for the sample oscillation (κ: –7 - 13°) during the energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction measurement. The z-axis rotation system of SPEED-Mk.II is the first installation of the multi-anvil press in the world.
