Outline of Beamline

Beamline BL36XU was constructed by the University of Electro-Communications and Institute for Molecular Science with support of RIKEN and JASRI under a New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) program, and moved to RIKEN beamline at March, 2020. BL36XU provides time-resolved QXAFS using tapered-Undulator beam and channel-cut monochromators, full-field/scanning XAFS imaging, XES, simultaneous time-resolved QXAFS/XRD, and pink beam experiment under in-situ experimental conditions.

Research Target

  • Time-resolved QXAFS
  • Full-field/scanning XAFS imaging
  • XES (HERFD-XANES, RIXS)
  • Simultaneous time-resolved QXAFS/XRD
  • Pink beam experiment

Key words

  • Measurement methods
XAFS, In-situ, operando, time-resolved XAFS, 100 nm focused beam, 3-dimensional XAFS-CT imaging, XES, HERFD-XANES, RIXS, XRD, pink beam
  • Equipment
transmission/fluorescence mode XAFS measurement equipment, XAFS-imaging system, XES measurement equipment, reaction gas supply and removal equipment, cryostat, high-temperature gas cell, fuel cell power generation equipment, polymer electrolyte fuel cell.

Source and Optics

  • Source
    In-vacuum type tapered undulator
  • Main optics
    ・Main optics are 1st mirror (M1), 2nd mirror (M2), two compact monochromators, high-energy-resolution monochromator for HAPES, 3rd mirror (M3) and 4th mirror (M4).
・The M1 and compact monochromators are cooled with liquid nitrogen. M2, M3 and M4 are cooled with water.
・All mirrors are coated with stripes of Pt and Rh. The M1 is a horizontal deflection flat mirror, and M2 is a spherically bent flat mirror for horizontal focusing. The M1 and M2 are placed apart at a distance of 7.5 m with a glancing angle of 2 mrad to separate reflected X-rays by 30 mm in the horizontal direction from high energy X-rays and gamma-rays emitted from the light source. The M3 and M4 are spherically bent flat mirrors for vertical focusing and higher harmonics rejection.
・The compact monochromators are driven with a servomotor. Two monochromators having a channel-cut Si (111) crystal and a Si (220) crystal are tandemly arranged to cover an energy range from 4.5 to 35 keV.
