Overview of Research Group, Goals and Purposes:

Optical and magnetic materials are widely used for various kinds of advanced electronic, memory, and sensing devices, and key material components for future industries. For the purpose of discussing and solving technical and scientific issues on developments of the new optical and magnetic materials in academic-industrial alliance, the 147th committee on amorphous and nano-crystalline materials of the JSPS program named as “University-Industry Research Cooperation Societally Applied Scientific Linkage and Collaboration” was organized. The 147th committee is of the five years project starting from Oct. 2013, consisting of about 90 researchers from both industry and academia. The interests of the committee are mainly in permanent magnets, electromagnetic materials & the devices, and opt-electric materials, from the view points of fundamental physics as well as material processing are covered. The advanced material-characterization techniques in SPring-8 are very effective to solve scientific and technical problems discussed in the committee. Especially, SPring-8 is extremely attractive facility for new materials-characterization techniques by X-ray spectroscopies, diffractions, and imaging. This provides the pin-point analysis using an X-ray nano-beam, soft X-ray spectroscopy & the imaging, the diffractive XAFS are included.

Here, as very new type of research group of SPRUC, we organize a research group named “Industry/Academia Alliance for Advanced Optical and Magnetic Materials” by starting from the members of the 147th committee where the most of them are still non-users of SPring-8. The research group will discuss various technical issues on developments of the permanent magnets, the electromagnetic materials & the devices, and the opt-electric materials in order to solve the problems using SPring-8. The aim of the present research group is to find potential users of SPring-8 by effective propagandas of utilization of SPring-8.

We will co-host scientific meetings and the other activities with the 147th committee in relating to developments of the permanent magnets, the electromagnetic materials & the devices, and the opt-electric materials. Through this kind of activity, it will become possible for SPring-8 users to share issues on materials characterization for industrial developments, and also to propose the solution by applying experiments at SPring-8. It is also helpful for the member of the committee to understand how SPring-8 can be used to solve technical problems in industrial researches. We would like to organize this research group in order to intensely promote the academic-industrial research collaborations in SPring-8 thorough the activities above. The present research group is proposed by the potential users, which will be a new trial for research group collaboration of SPRUC.
