SPEED-1500

SPEED-1500 (SPring-Eight Energy Dispersive system with a hydraulic ram of 1500 ton, Fig. 1) is a uniaxial large-volume press consists of a Kawai-type high-pressure vessel and two single-axis goniometers (the vertical one is for CCD imaging and the horizontal one is for X-ray diffraction with 2θ range from –10° to 23°). SPEED-1500 can be moved in the 4-axis directions (x-, y-, z-axis) with a precision of 1 micron around the z-axis rotation. SPEED-1500 is a double-stage type (Kawai-type) compression with 1500-ton ram force, and the outside first-stage consists of six cubic type anvils in the [100] axis direction. The inside second-stage consists of eight cubic anvils, each of which has one corner truncated into a triangular face. The eight faces form an octahedral cavity. The eight second-stage anvils that are compressed by the six first-stage anvils compress an octahedral shaped pressure medium (Kawai-type high pressure vessel: Fig. 2). In the present system, a 26 x 26 x 26 mm3 tungsten carbide (WC) cube can be used as the second anvil. 30 GPa over 2500 K has been reached with the WC anvils.
