Large volume deformation press
The large-volume deformation press system (commonly known as MADONNA-press) regularly installed in Experiment Hatch 2 is a public-use facility transferred and relocated from Ehime University in 2025. This apparatus allows tri-axial deformation experiments to be conducted under high pressure within the specimen chamber, utilizing two independently controlled vertical D-rams in addition to the standard DIA-type pressurization mechanism. The main ram has a maximum load capacity of 15 MN, while the differential ram has a maximum load capacity of 4.3 MN. Among deformation high-pressure devices of this type at synchrotron radiation facilities, it is capable of applying one of the world's largest loads. This MADONNA press is mounted on a 5-axis high-speed stage. This high-speed stage can be controlled with 1 µm precision in the translational directions (y1, x, y2, z) and the z-axis rotational direction (κ), with maximum move speeds of 1 mm/s in the horizontal direction and 0.14 mm/s in the vertical direction.
