Body text

Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is under way for understanding of the biological effects of MRT on the tumorous microvasculature in a rat model of cancer. Rat brains implanted with carcinoma will be irradiated for the study of microvascular biological response in tumor angiogenic vessels following MRT.

Technique

Microplanar X-ray beams are produced from a white synchrotron radiation beam using a multi-slit collimator and metal filters for hardening the X-ray beam. The multi-slit collimator provides array of microbeams (beam width of 25 µm and distance between slits 200 µm) for MRT. An ion chamber can estimate the dose rate in Gy/sec during the irradiations.
