ABSTRACT

This contract beamline is designed by Toyota Central R&D Labs. Inc. in collaboration with RIKEN and JASRI. The light source is a tapered undulator, which is the first one in SPring-8. A compact monochromator is newly designed, so that it can oscillate much faster than the standard double crystal monochromator. These source and optics enable high speed time-resolved XAFS with time resolution of several tens of millisecond. Its experimental facility is located outside the storage ring. It has also our own gas facility, which enables us to perform in situ experiments under various kinds of atmospheres and temperatures.

AREA OF RESEARCH

  • Analysis and evaluation of materials used in car industry, time-resolved XAFS

KEYWORD

  • Scientific Field
XAFS, Imaging, Laminography, 3D-XRD, in situ analysis
  • Equipment
XAFS, gas facility, mass analyzer, sample cell for in situ analysis

SOURCE AND OPTICS

The light source is vacuum undulator equipped with tapering mechanism.
Main optics consist of the 1st mirror(M1), standard double-crystal monochromator, the 2nd mirror(M2), compact monochromator, the 3rd mirror, the 4th mirror , and the 5th mirrot.
All mirrors are cooled by water and coated with Pt and Rh.
The double-crystal standard monochromator are cooled by liquid nitrogen, Si(111) and Si(311) planes arranged side by side and the set is switchable, covering 4.7 to 37.7 keV in the Si(111) and 8.9 to 72.3 keV in the Si(311).
For the compact monochromator, two Si channel cut crystals cooled by liquid nitrogen, are driven by servo motor coupled with a rotary feedthrough using magnetic fluid. Si(111) covers energy range 4.0-28.2keV, Si(220) covers 6.5-46.0keV.

EXPERIMENTAL STATIONS

XAFS measurement apparatus is put on a bench. Sample position is 120m far from the source.
Transmission XAFS ( ion chamber), fluorescence XAFS (Lytle and scintillation counter), conversion electron yield XAFS are available.
High speed gas reaction analysis system is installed in the 2nd experimental hutch for in situ XAFS experiments. It has 3 independent gas supply lines, and high speed gas switching mechanism and mass analyzer which can analyze 5 gaseous species in every 50 msec.
