Abstract

BL43LXU, the RIKEN Quantum NanoDynamics Beamline, is dedicated to studying fast dynamics of materials on the nano-scale (i.e. correlations on atomic length scales) using non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The beamline has two spectrometers, a high (~1 to 3 meV) resolution spectrometer for phonon studies and a medium (~30 meV) resolution spectrometer for electronic excitations.

Areas of Research

  • Lattice dynamics, Phonons in crystalline and disordered materials, including liquids. Sound velocities and elasticity, especially in extreme conditions e.g. (P›200 GPa). Electronic excitations.

Keywords

  • Phonons, Dynamics, Inelastic X-ray Scattering, IXS, NRIXS, Orbitons, d-d excitations, crystal field excitations

Source & Optics

The source is 3x5m long, 19mm period, IDs tunable from 14.4 to 25 keV in the fundamental. Optics are variable, including backscattering and in-line high-resolution monochromators. Focal spots at the sample vary from 5 to 50 microns in diameter, depending on setup.

Experimental Stations

  • High Resolution IXS
  • Medium Resolution IXS
