Experiments Using Radioactive Substances

If you wish to conduct experiments using sealed radioactive substances with an activity not exceeding the maximum allowed by law, or international controlled materials, prior approval is required. A project leader is required to submit the following documents to the JASRI Safety Office by the designated date.

Usage of radioactive substances Required documents Submit to
Samples containing radioactive substances (including soil) [Form 34] Application for Approval of Experiments Using Radioactive Samples JASRI Safety Office
Samples containing international controlled materials (natural uranium, thorium, etc.) [Form 34] Application for Approval of Experiments Using Radioactive Samples JASRI Safety Office
[Form 22] Plan for Using International Controlled Materials
Detector calibration using sealed radiation sources [Form 21] Application for Bringing in Sealed Radiation Sources JASRI Safety Office
Other Please consult the JASRI Safety Office

■ Application for Approval of Experiments Using Radioactive Samples: Form 34 (Project leader)
•JASRI’s Committee on Radiation Safety in User Experiments will review the radiation safety issues of your experiments regardless of forms or quantities of the radioactive samples to be used. Please submit this Form 34 by email to the JASRI Safety Office by the designated date.
•If the committee determines that your safety measures including sealing methods are inadequate, the committee would ask you to improve your experimental method or devices. Your understanding and cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

■ Application for Bringing in Sealed Radiation Sources: Form 21 (project leader)
•Only Authorized sealed radiation sources are acceptable.
•Please submit this Form 21 by email to the JASRI Safety Office by the designated date.
•We may contact you to secure the safe handling of your radiation sources.

■ Plan for Using International Controlled Materials: Form 22

• See this page for details of the international controlled materials acceptable at SPring-8.
We accept only the international controlled materials transferred from the domestic institutions authorized on the basis of the relevant law.
• Unsealed international controlled materials are not acceptable. The sealing methods of your samples will be investigated by JASRI’s Committee on Radiation Safety in User Experiments as mentioned above.
•In addition to the Application for Approval of Experiments Using Radioactive Samples,  submit the [Form 22] Plan for Using  Internationally Controlled Materials in writing or electronic form to the JASRI Safety Office by the due date.

In SPring-8, the samples containing uranium and thorium can be used in a radiation experiment under the following authorization conditions.

‹Authorization Conditions›
1. Purpose of use
Research of electron state, magnetic condition, and crystalline structure of uranium compounds and thorium compounds using the interaction between light and electrons.

2. The method of operation
Sample analysis by XAFS, EXAFS, XAS, XMCD, X-ray diffraction, Compton scattering, and Mossbauer effect etc.

3. Authorized place of use and materials:

4. Other conditions
Regarding the handling of samples containing uranium and thorium, it is assumed that the samples can be considered to be sealed. Since the appropriateness of the sealing method is judged on a case-by-case basis, consult the Safety Office beforehand. SPring-8 has acquired permission to use internationally controlled materials. Therefore, the samples can only be accepted from institutions that have permission for use that is specified in Article 52 of the Act on the Regulations of Nuclear Source Materials, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors (Act No. 66 of June 10, 1957). Thank you for your understanding.

All the samples containing uranium and thorium must be returned to the original institution. Therefore, it is required to submit an authorization form for returning in advance.

‹Required Procedures for the Experiment Using Samples Containing Uranium and Thorium›
Basic flow from receiving internationally controlled materials to carrying them out is shown in the flowchart in Figure 1.
