Injury

What should I do if someone gets injured or becomes ill during the experiment?

If the injury or illness is not severe, and it happens during office hours (9:00 to 17:30) on a weekday, you can go to the Health Office (ext. 999). First-aid kits are provided in several places such as outside large doors throughout the Storage Ring Facility, to be used for emergency treatment.
Please visit the nearest medical institution for treatment on holidays and after hours.
It is necessary to report the injury to the relevant department, even if it is a minor injury.

Emergency

What should I do if someone gets seriously injured or becomes seriously ill (an ambulance is necessary) during the experiment?

Call extension 119 (Security Guard) concerning an injury or illness that requires an ambulance.
The Security Guard will call an ambulance.
If it is considered necessary to move the person to a medical institution by ambulance, call extension 119 and ask the Security Guard to call an ambulance. (Do not directly call the fire department by using external line 119.)

When calling the Security Guard, calm down and accurately report the following items.
· The place where an ambulance is needed.
· The number of injured people.
· The state of the injured people.
· Other necessary precautions.
· Name, organization, and PHS number of the caller.

Perform emergency medical care such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (artificial respiration, cardiac compression, and AED) and emergency bleeding control until the emergency personnel arrive. Since emergency medical care is extremely important for the injured or sick person, it is strongly recommended to take standard first aid training courses to be familiar with the first aid method.

Disaster

What should I do in case of fire?

If you spot a fire, call out loudly to alert the people in the vicinity, and immediately call extension 119.
Even if you pushed the alarm button (or the alarm has already gone off), you have to call extension 119 to inform the security guard. (The Security Guard will call the fire department. Do not directly call 119 using an external line.)

When calling the Security Guard, calm down and accurately report the following items. · The location of the fire
· The state of the fire
· The presence or absence of injured people, and their number and condition.
· Other items necessary for firefighting operations.
· Organization, name, and PHS number of the caller.

Initial firefighting
Initial firefighting should be tried by those who are in the vicinity of the fire, paying adequate attention to safety. If the initial firefighting is difficult (Note), evacuate immediately.
If a private fire brigade gives instructions, follow the instructions to fight the fire.

Evacuation
(1) Evacuation from the place of fire
Those who are near the fire, but not participating in the initial firefighting, must quickly evacuate to the nearest evacuation site. While evacuating, actively help users who are not familiar with the facility and people with physical disabilities.
If the private fire brigade gives instructions to evacuate, follow the instructions.
If the fire is confirmed, an emergency announcement will be made to give information such as the place of fire.
Those who are in the area where an evacuation order has been given through public address system (area around the place of fire) must evacuate immediately. The private fire brigade must rush to the place of fire to perform their duty.

(2) At the evacuation site
Once you have evacuated to the nearest evacuation site, write the organization and name in the appropriate evacuee list (JASRI staff, RIKEN staff, and others) which is placed in the store of each evacuation site, and stay in the evacuation site until the Safety Office lifts the evacuation order.
Follow the instructions of the private fire brigade.

What should I do in case of an earthquake (intensity 4 or higher)?

At SPring-8, when an earthquake of intensity 4 or higher is predicted, a warning alarm automatically sounds and announces, “Earthquake. Attention, earthquake.” every 30 seconds. If you hear the announcement, take the following actions.

· Calm down and keep yourself physically safe.
· Stay away from places where there is danger that things might fall over, and hide under a stable desk.
· When the earthquake has subsided, put out any fires and give first aid to those who are injured. Follow the instructions of the central monitor room and evacuate to the nearest evacuation site without panicking (Do not use an elevator).
In case of an earthquake, limit the use of internal phone and PHS to a minimum so as not to disturb the communication for emergency activities.

During the earthquake
Instead of exiting the building immediately, first protect yourself on the spot from things that have fallen over or down. Turn off any sources of heat or flames if you have been using it, and stop the operation if you are using a crane or conducting dangerous activities such as activities in elevated places to prevent damage.

Survey of the damage
The person in charge of the survey of damage in each department must survey the damage to their responsible area (including the presence or absence of injured) and report the result according to the rule of each department. The other people should also report any damage to the designated person in each department after surveying the surroundings. (If you spot a fire, follow the instructions in the above-mentioned “In case of fire”.)
