ABSTRACT

  BL17SU is designed to promote research on advanced materials by making use of a variety of spectroscopic methods facilitated by high brilliance soft X-ray undulator radiation. Electronic structures and chemical states of various kinds of materials are investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), photoemission spectroscopy (PES), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), soft X-ray diffraction (SXD), and so on. BL17SU is composed of two branched beamlines (branch A and B) in which the soft X-ray beams can be introduced exclusively by switching a beam path using a pre-mirror.
  Branch A has four experimental stations (Ac, A1 and A3). A PES apparatus for gas-phase target and a versatile XAS apparatus combined with a gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) gun are installed in Ac station, a versatile PES apparatus in A1, and a scanning soft X-ray microscope in A3 are installed. On the other hand, branch B is composed of stations B1, Bc and B2. An SXD apparatus is installed in B1 station, a versatile photoemission electron microscope (PEEM) in Bc, and an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) apparatus in B2.
  Currently, only the scanning soft x-ray spectromicroscope (branch A) and the versatile PEEM (branch B) apparatuses are open for public use and others are used exclusively by RIKEN staffs.

AREA OF RESEARCH

<Branch A>

  • Atomic and molecular science by XAS and PES/AES of gas-phase target --- Ac station
  • Electronic states (including their depth-dependence) investigation of solid state materials combined with a GCIB gun --- Ac station
  • Analysis of electronic states and band structures by PES --- A1 station
  • Spectromicroscopy of materials surfaces under the conditions of low-vacuum or He ambient pressure environment --- A3 station

<Branch B>

  • Electronic structure analysis of materials with long-period ordering --- B1 station
  • Electronic/magnetic states imaging and its time-resolved observations by PEEM --- Bc station
  • Visualization of electronic states and band structures of advanced materials by ARPES --- B2 station

SOURCE AND OPTICS

  • source

     New Helical-8 Undulator will be operated after 2022B period.
    Horizontally-, vertically- and circularly-polarized light will be provided.
    Only for the vertically-polarized light, the lowest energy will be available at 125eV.

  • optics

     As indicated in schematic drawings below (top view), soft X-ray beams are introduced exclusively to either branch A or B by inserting/retracting pre-focusing mirrors (M0a, M1a) installed in the optical hutch. Both the branches are equipped with each set of beamline monochromators which is composed of spherical mirrors (M21a~M23a、M21b&M22b) and varied line spacing plane grating monochromators (VLSPGMs, G1a&G2a、G1b&G2b). In addition, each pair of re-focusing mirrors is installed just before A1, A2, B1, Bc and B2 stations where the beams can be focused down to approximately 30 µm (H) × 10 µm (V) on the sample.
