Abstract

Beginning the afternoon of Monday, 13 February, there will be a workshop on high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). This will (1) focus on scientific opportunities with a long undulator beamline and (2) serve as a partial subgroup meeting to discuss phonon measurements in highly correlated electron materials.

The purpose of the first part (which takes place mostly on 2/14) is to help develop a scientific case for building a new long-undulator beamline dedicated to high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. This beamline should provide a factor of 5 more flux than is presently available and is expected to open new possibilities for measurements of the dynamics of materials. While there is already an excellent case for such an instrument based on incremental improvement from experiments at present beamlines, we would like to solicit input as to new science that might be done at such a facility.

Possible directions for a new long-undulator beamline dedicated to inelastic x-ray scattering with meV resolution. Note that main focus is planned to be non-resonant measurements and the maximum scan range is expected to be ~ 2 eV.
