Title: Application of ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy tocatalysis studies

Abstract:
 Photoelectron spectroscopy provides information of materials surfacewhich is crucial for understanding catalytic performance on aheterogeneous catalyst as heterogeneous catalysis is performed onsurface of the catalyst. Driven by pressure and temperature factors,surface of a catalyst in gas phase at a relatively high pressure duringcatalysis could be different from that before catalysis or at roomtemperature after catalysis at high temperature. We have used lab-basedambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to reveal activephases of catalysts performing catalysis at high temperature in mixtureof reactants at relatively high pressure, track stable intermediatesformed by reactants, dynamic surfaces of catalysts at a relatively hightemperatures and pressures. I will present examples of these functionsof AP-XPS in our recent studies of catalysis and discuss how AP-XPScould be used in designing catalysts.
