Synchrotron radiation (SR) is light (electromagnetic wave) emitted by electrons moving in magnetic fields. SPring-8 is a facility for experiments with SR as a scientific probe. There are two kinds of SR sources: a bending magnet, which provides a uniform magnetic field, and an insertion device, which uses a spatially periodic magnetic field. The characteristics of radiation from the two sources are considerably different, thus it is important to know the characteristis of radiation for effective experiments using SR.
